When you first open Family Hub, choose either Create a Family or Join a Family.
The person who creates a family becomes the first Parent/Administrator. Parents can invite additional family members and manage the features available to their household.
Family Hub requires an Apple iCloud account for family data storage and syncing.
Select Create a Family and enter the information requested during setup.
Once your family has been created, you can begin adding family members, vehicles, birthdays, calendar events, chores, wishlists, and other household information.
Parents can also customize Family Hub and turn off sections their household does not need.
Turning off a section hides it from the family. It does not automatically delete information already saved in that section.
If someone has invited you to an existing Family Hub household, follow the invitation you received.
You must accept the invitation before you can access that family's information.
Simply downloading Family Hub does not give someone access to a household.
Parent/Administrator users can invite family members using either a phone number or email address.
The invited person must accept the invitation using their Apple/iCloud account before they can access the household.
Parents can assign the appropriate user role when adding a family member.
Family Hub includes two primary user roles.
Parent/Administrator
Parents can manage family members, settings, household features, vehicles, maintenance, chores, and other administrative information.
Kid/User
Kid accounts have more limited permissions. Depending on the feature, kids may be able to view family information, manage their own wishlists, submit grocery requests, view or complete assigned chores, participate in family messaging, and use other features allowed by the household.
Vehicles can be entered manually or added using VIN-assisted setup.
Family Hub can track:
• Vehicle year, make, and model
• VIN
• Mileage
• Maintenance history
• Receipts
• Upcoming maintenance
• Maintenance requests
• Registration and other vehicle information
You can:
• Scan the VIN using the camera
• Select a photo containing the VIN
• Type or paste the VIN manually
Family Hub can use the VIN to retrieve available vehicle information and prepare the vehicle record.
Always review the information before saving it.
Manual vehicle entry is also available.
Family Hub can read an odometer photo to help update vehicle mileage.
Take a clear picture of the odometer and review the detected mileage before saving it.
Family Hub will not intentionally update permanent mileage records without confirmation.
Take a picture of a maintenance receipt or invoice and Family Hub can help identify information such as:
• Date
• Mileage
• Service provider
• Maintenance performed
• Cost
Review the information before adding it to the vehicle's maintenance history.
Common maintenance options may include:
• Oil change
• Tire rotation
• Tires
• Brakes
• Battery
• Wiper blades
• Engine air filter
• Cabin air filter
• Alignment
• Transmission service
• Coolant service
• Inspection
• Registration
• Other
Use Other when the maintenance performed is not already listed.
Family members can submit a maintenance request when they notice something that may need attention.
Requests can include a description, vehicle information, mileage, and photos.
Parents can review the request and determine what action is needed.
Family Hub can track maintenance that is due based on mileage.
When a vehicle reaches within approximately 200 miles of scheduled maintenance, Family Hub can display a maintenance-due alert.
Maintenance reminders remain associated with the vehicle until the service is completed or the reminder is updated.
Notification delivery requires Family Hub notifications to be enabled on the device.
Family members can manually create calendar events for activities such as:
• Appointments
• School events
• Sports
• Birthdays
• Trips
• Family activities
• Other household events
Family Hub can help create calendar events from a picture of a schedule, flyer, invitation, or similar document.
The app may identify:
• Event names
• Dates
• Times
• Locations
• Repeating events
Family Hub will show proposed events for review before they are added.
Always check scanned dates and times before saving them.
Family Hub can keep family birthdays organized in one place and show upcoming birthdays.
Parents can add or edit family birthday information according to their household permissions.
Family members can maintain their own birthday wishlists.
Wishlist items can be added by:
• Manual entry
• Taking a photo
• Selecting a photo
• Scanning a barcode
• Adding shopping information or a link
When Family Hub identifies an item from a picture, review the product information before saving it.
Christmas wishlists work separately from birthday wishlists.
This allows family members to maintain different lists for different occasions.
Wishlist information may include:
• Item name
• Brand
• Size
• Color
• Price
• Notes
• Photo
• Shopping link
Home Repairs helps families keep track of things around the home that need attention.
Repairs can be organized as:
• Needed
• In Progress
• Completed
A repair may include descriptions, photos, costs, contractor information, receipts, and other notes.
When work has been completed, you can save a permanent repair record.
A completed repair can include:
• What was repaired
• Date completed
• Repair category
• Contractor or service provider
• Cost
• Receipt or invoice
• Before and after photos
• Warranty information
• Notes
You may also photograph a receipt or invoice and allow Family Hub to prepare the repair information for review.
Parents can create chores and assign them to family members.
A chore may include:
• Chore name
• Description
• Assigned family member
• Due date
• Due time
• Repeat schedule
• Automatic reminders
The assigned family member can mark the chore complete when finished.
Parents can turn on Remind Until Completed for a chore.
Available reminder schedules may include intervals such as:
• Every 3 hours
• Every 6 hours
• Every 12 hours
• Daily
Reminders continue until the assigned person marks the chore complete.
Once the chore is completed, remaining reminders for that occurrence stop.
Parents can reopen a chore or change its reminder settings if needed.
Family members can add grocery items they want or need.
A grocery request may include:
• Item name
• Want or Need
• Quantity
• Category
• Priority
• Brand or size
• Notes
• Photo or barcode
• Who requested the item
Parents can review requests and update their status.
Statuses may include:
• Requested
• On List
• Purchased
• Declined
Important Numbers provides a convenient place for commonly used family contacts.
Examples may include:
• Doctors
• Dentists
• Schools
• Insurance companies
• Roadside assistance
• Utilities
• Veterinarians
• Emergency contacts
• Frequently used businesses
Only store information you are comfortable sharing with members of your Family Hub household.
Family Hub includes family communication features.
Depending on household settings, family members may use:
• Family-wide announcements
• Group conversations
• Direct messages
Only invited members of the household should have access to household messaging.
Family Hub uses assisted scanning and intelligent tools to reduce manual data entry.
These features may help with:
• VINs
• Odometer readings
• Vehicle receipts
• Home repair receipts
• Calendars and schedules
• Wishlist items
• Barcodes
• Other supported documents and photos
Automated recognition can make mistakes.
Family Hub is designed to show detected or suggested information for review before it becomes part of your permanent household records.
Family Hub may ask for permission to use your camera or photo library when you choose a scanning or photo feature.
You can manage these permissions through:
iPhone Settings → Privacy & Security
or:
iPhone Settings → Family Hub
Family Hub uses notifications for features such as:
• Chore reminders
• Maintenance alerts
• Family reminders
• Other enabled household notifications
To check notification permissions:
Open iPhone Settings → Notifications → Family Hub
Make sure Allow Notifications is enabled.
Family Hub uses Apple's iCloud and CloudKit technologies to store and synchronize family information.
If information is not updating between devices:
Confirm the device has an internet connection.
Confirm the device is signed into the correct Apple account.
Confirm iCloud is available.
Close and reopen Family Hub.
Allow time for recent changes to synchronize.
Family Hub is designed so that downloading the app does not automatically provide access to a family's information.
A person must be invited to the household and successfully accept the invitation before receiving family access.
Family information is intended to remain within the family's iCloud/CloudKit environment and be shared with invited household members.
See the Family Hub Privacy Policy for additional information.
Parents can turn off sections that their family does not use.
This helps keep the Home screen and navigation focused on the features that matter to that household.
Disabled sections can be enabled again later.
Unless otherwise stated in the app, disabling a section does not automatically erase the information previously stored there.
If Family Hub is not working as expected, try the following:
Confirm your iPhone has an internet connection.
Confirm you are signed into iCloud.
Close and reopen Family Hub.
Check that Family Hub has permission to use notifications, the camera, or photos if the feature requires them.
Restart the iPhone.
Check for an updated version of Family Hub in the App Store.
